March 15, 2020 was when everything shut down. The week before, I had private student lessons, a quartet rehearsal of my own, and a help session with the flute section at a local high school. By then end of the next week, I was teaching my private students online. We had to get creative with music and I think we did. Now I teach out of my house again, but I do hope people tell me if they are sick and I can always switch from in person to online. Take a look at our journey...
April 2020. My former flute teacher and mentor, Dr. Amy Zuback, and I get together to listen to and give feedback to each others' students, via Zoom, of course. Florida and Oklahoma!
A big quest for the most optimal flute PPE. I found a flute playing band director from Ohio who shared her idea. This is it in stages so that I could share with others.
And made a few dozen for me, my students, high school flute sections. Also shown are flute end covers. There is a video of a flutist blowing out a candle with the air emitted from the end of her flute playing low C (a keys covered)
October 2020. Teaching from the garage is the new norm. But at least I get to see my students in person again. I kept some distance and used mask and face shield. The birds joined in sometimes.
November 2020. I took advantage of a couple of online flute classes. One was on the history of the Paris Conservatory Flute Competition and one on a practicing technique.
January 2021. A post holiday concert (due to rain) of solos, and small ensembles with some of my students on my front porch. Families sat in pods and it was really nice, but very cold.
May 2021. A good time to completely overhaul my flute of 20 years. I tried a different kind of pad and wanted her all polished and shiny again. I have maintained my flute regularly but this was a complete overhaul.
June 2021. Finally, an in person recital for my students. A complete success!
